Once a working crab boat on the Bering Sea—later made famous as the Time Bandit on Deadliest Catch—the Ursus now charts calmer but no less wild waters. Refitted for just eight guests, she’s our private, seaworthy basecamp for exploring the bear-filled coastlines of Katmai.

IIn between bear country chapters, we touch down beside Lake Hood, where floatplanes drift across glassy water and the trail around the lake hums with movement. The Coast Inn offers a warm, quiet place to rest—without stepping too far from the wild.

King Salmon Lodge

Set above the Naknek River—a vital estuary that fuels the largest salmon run on Earth—this wilderness lodge is our home while we explore Brooks Falls and other bear-rich river systems. Each day begins with a floatplane flight into the wild and ends with riverside views, fresh Alaskan meals, and the possibility of moose at dawn or aurora borealis shimmering overhead.
