-
Explore the Cradle of Humanity
Trek through Afro-alpine plateaus above 12,000 feet, where the wind carries silence and the land remembers our beginnings. In this stark, soaring terrain—where humankind’s roots run deep—you’ll hike among lobelia forests, scan cliff edges for endangered walia ibex, and feel the humbling scale of the Roof of Africa.

“I’ve traveled a lot in my life, but nothing compares to this. One morning I was watching the sunrise at Borobudur with mist rolling off the jungle, and by the end of the week I was face-to-face with a Komodo dragon. The orangutans made me cry. The food was unreal. And the way World Untouched weaves cultural immersion with conservation made it all feel meaningful. It wasn’t just a trip—it was a reset.”

Your Day-by-Day Journey Through Ethiopia
-
Arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s high-altitude capital bursting with rhythm, resilience, and history. This buzzing city—never colonized, always independent—welcomes you at 7,700 feet above sea level. We visit the National Museum to meet Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old hominin who reshaped our understanding of human origins. After settling into our hotel, we gather for a welcome dinner and orientation.
-
Fly north to Gondar, then climb by road into the jaw-dropping Simien Mountains. Known as the "Roof of Africa," this highland expanse is a wild fortress of cliffs, escarpments, and sweeping valleys. This afternoon, we encounter gelada monkeys—charismatic, chest-patched grazers that roam in enormous troops and let us into their world like few primates ever do.
-
Spend two full days tracing the spines of these legendary peaks. Hike among towering lobelia, scan for circling Lammergeyers, and keep watch for the Walia ibex—those tightrope-walking mountain antelopes clinging to ledges where few creatures dare. The air is thin, the silence deep, and the scenery ancient and humbling.
-
Descend back into Gondar’s historical quarters where the stone fortresses of Emperor Fassilidas await. We explore medieval palaces and the intricately painted Debre Birhan Selassie church before enjoying a family-style lunch at a beloved local restaurant. Cultural performance and traditional dishes round out the day.
-
Soar to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s living spiritual masterpiece. Here, faith is carved into the earth. We descend into subterranean chambers and cross hand-hewn passageways to discover churches that seem more dreamt than built—crafted entirely from volcanic rock, each one whispering centuries of devotion.
-
Ascend to the mountaintop monastery of Asheton Maryam for sunrise views across the highlands. Afterward, step inside a local home for a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony—slow, sacred, and utterly aromatic. Learn the cultural significance of coffee in Ethiopia’s rural communities.
-
Fly to southern Ethiopia and land in Jinka, a small town perched on the edge of the Omo Valley. This culturally rich region is home to some of the continent’s most distinct and storied tribal communities. Settle into a peaceful lodge and prepare for a cultural deep-dive.
-
Journey into the lands of the Mursi people, known for their decorative lip plates and elaborate body adornment. With the help of a local cultural interpreter, learn about their customs, symbolism, and connection to land. We also visit the Ari tribe, known for their rich agricultural practices and colorful dress.
-
Follow the Omo River through tribal lands, stopping in villages to meet with Hamar and Karo communities. Witness body art, hair braiding traditions, and possibly a bull-jumping ceremony—a rite of passage for young men. This is not a show—it’s an honest look at cultures living with resilience at the edge of change.
-
Fly back to Addis, where we enjoy a final celebratory meal before departing Ethiopia. Freshen up in day rooms before your international flight. You’ve walked the highlands, shared coffee in mountain homes, and shaken hands in the Omo Valley. You leave with more than memories—you leave with connection.

Pace and Place
-
This immersive Indonesia journey includes daily walks of 1 to 3 miles, often across natural, uneven terrain—from volcanic sand fields and jungle trails to temple steps and forest paths. You’ll navigate steep staircases at Borobudur, lava-scarred slopes on Mount Merapi, boat landings in Komodo, and root-laced trails in Borneo’s rainforest.
This is an active, sensory-rich experience, designed for travelers who can move with confidence through changing landscapes and embrace the terrain as part of the adventure. While most walks are moderate in difficulty, heat, humidity, and remote settings can add challenge.
If you experience joint, back, or mobility issues, we encourage thoughtful consideration. This trip is best suited for those who seek wild, immersive travel with a spirit of exploration—and don’t mind getting a little dirty along the way.
-
Indonesia sits just above the equator, which means tropical weather year-round—but with remarkable variation across its many islands. Expect warm, humid days with highs in the 80s–90s°F (27–35°C) and cooler evenings in higher elevations like Mount Bromo or Ubud’s jungled hills.
Rain is always a possibility in the tropics, but our trips are scheduled in the dry season (May to September) for the best conditions—clear mornings, dramatic skies, and vivid sunsets. In Borneo, you may feel the air grow thick with jungle humidity, while the breezy coastlines of Bali and Komodo offer a refreshing counterbalance.
Light, breathable clothing is key. And if you’re a sunrise chaser or volcano hiker, pack a light jacket—you’ll be glad you did.
